Choirs offered at Cactus High School (2010 - 2011)
Mixed Choir
This is a non auditioned mixed ensemble that will perform at all choir concerts throughout the year.  Special attention will be on a high quality performance through the study of vocal production, tone, quality, diction, and balance.  In addition to this, we will be studying sight reading daily.  This is a performing group, and all performances are required.  This course may be repeated for credit.  Most performances occur after school hours.  
Concert Choir
This is an advanced choral ensemble of experienced singers selected by the director designed for the study, rehearsal, and performance of high quality vocal literature of all types.  Special attention will be on high quality performance through the study of vocal production, tone, quality, diction, and balance.  Advanced music reading is taught.  This is a performing group, and all performances are required.  This course may be repeated for credit.  Most performances occur after school hours.  Multiple sections may exist to accommodate unique groupings, i.e. Mixed Choir.
Womens' Ensemble
Womens' Ensemble is a very select group of women who perform often. Like Varsity Jazz, the Womens' Ensemble travels and competes through the year. The group consists of upper-classmen who study and prepare difficult music of all types. This award-winning group is chosen by audition only; sight (music) reading skills and choral experience are necessary.  This is a performing group, and all performances are required.

Naja Voce
This is an advanced group of limited size selected by the director to study and perform high quality music. One must be an highly experienced singer with the ability to read music well. The group will perform jazz, pop (show), and classical music a great deal, both in and out of school, and is a public relations builder for the high school. This is a performing group, and all performances are required. Audition for membership is required. This course may be repeated for credit. Most performances occur after school hours.

Mr. & Mrs. Rafferty in Prague
About the Director  Mr. Rafferty accepted the position as Choral
Director at Cactus High School in 2005.  This year will be his sixth year directing the Cactus Choirs and has loved every year with them.  Previously he directed the choirs at Apollo High School and Copper King School and coached baseball at Cactus High School, Apollo High School, and Tolleson High School.  Mr. Rafferty attended Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona where he studied Music Education and baseball.  While at GCU, Mr. Rafferty pitched for the varsity baseball team for 4 years and was named to the 1st Team All Region and 2nd Team All-Conference.
Mr. Rafferty was a member of the prestigious President's Singers and the University Chorale at Grand Canyon University. He acted in GCU's production of the opera "Casey at the Bat" as Pitcher Andy Jones.  He also appeared in the music video, "How Great Thou Art"  with Glen Campbell and other select GCU choral members.
For twelve years, Mr. Rafferty was a member of the Sonoran Desert Chorale under the direction of Jeff Harris.  During this time he had the opportunity to tour Europe with the Chorale and sing in some of the major cathedrals of Europe, including St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague and Salzburg Cathedral. Since then he has continued to perform and compete, even placing in the top 8 of a national talent competition hosted by the L.A. Dodgers.

Mr. Rafferty was married in December of 2000 to his wife Genny, who teaches in her private piano and voice studio in Peoria and also enjoys accompanying the choirs at Cactus.  They have two children who keep them entertained and very busy!  They also have two Boxer dogs, Crash and Champ-named in honor of the Cactus Football team's State Championship win in 2005.
